Tatsuo Kawaguchi
Tatsuo Kawaguchi and Yusuke Nakahara enjoyed what might be described as one of the most fruitful relationships between an artist and a critic. While Kawaguchi attended Nakahara’s classes at Tama Art University in 1958, Nakahara selected Kawaguchi’s work for the “Between Man and Matter” exhibition of 1970 and wrote a total of 15 essays on the sculptor. Nakahara posits that the “relation” in Kawaguchi’s work is the relationship between the visible and the invisible, and explores how Kawaguchi aims to convey “what’s beyond our five senses” through what’s already visible to our eyes. “Relation and Disrelation: On Tatsuo Kawaguchi” is a book for the 2002 exhibition of the same title. The publication contains Nakahara’s essays on Kawaguchi, and at the same time, embodies Kawaguchi’s thought on Nakahara. This exhibition features 29 original drawings used as illustrations for the book.
