Although appearing contextless at first glance, Kei Jimba’s works consistently search for contours of the self and its surrounding environments. Here he presents new “self-portraits” from his Natural Conclusions series started in 2017. For these works, he drew on episodes of his own experiences, recording their settings, characters, feelings, and impressions in essays that he then transcribed as paintings. He describes these works with much to say about relationships between subjectivity, experience, and memory as “not just explanatory but formative.” They can be experienced as both essays to be read and paintings to be viewed.
