Korai Chawan: Choson Dynasty Bowls as Seen Through the Eyes of Japanese Tea Aesthetics

Mitsui Memorial Museum
Finished
Korai bowls originated in Korea as ceramics for everyday use, but were adapted as tea ceremony bowls and admired for their austere wabicha properties in Japan. They became especially popular from the Momoyama period (1574–1600) and enjoyed a resurgence in a new form suitable for Japanese styles in the Edo period (1615 – 1868). This exhibition introduces the beauty of Korai tea bowls.
