Laugh Off This Hopeless World: Fukuzawa Ichiro

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Fukuzawa Ichiro
Ichiro Fukuzawa (1898–1992), a leader of the avant-garde movement that introduced Surrealism to Japan in the 1930s, created socially critical works of art throughout his lifetime. An intelligent sense of humor permeates his “mysterious images” that satirically laugh off the contradictions of society and the foolishness of people. This exhibition looks back on Fukuzawa’s career with around 100 of his diverse paintings.
