Pictorialism: Robert Demachy and Others

Art Gallery M84
Finished

Artists

Robert Demachy, Constant Puyo, Edward Steichen et al.
This exhibition features the work of Robert Demachy, Constant Puyo, and Edward Steichen, whose pursuit of photographic beauty can be considered within the context of Japanese realism. Pictorialism, which pursued painterly beauty in photography, became a major movement at the end of the 1800s.
Demachy, a representative of Pictorialism, competed with major Impressionists such as Cézanne and Degas. Eleven of his platinum prints owned by the French government and printed on his own original glass panel by Claudine Sudre are exhibited, along with a photo book of his work with Club Photo de Paris.
