Yutaka Matsuzawa “80 Years Problem”

Museum Haus Kasuya
Finished

Artists

Yutaka Matsuzawa
After declaring his mission to “get rid of objects” in June of 1964, Yutaka Matsuzawa moved away from his sculptural work into a purely conceptual practice of art and performance using lettering. His international activities as a leading contemporary artist included participation in the 1977 São Paulo Biennale and a performance at Tate Modern in 2001. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 84, but gained further attention when his works were featured in the 2009 MoMA exhibition “In & Out of Amsterdam: Travels in Conceptual Art, 1960–1976.” He was also selected for the 2014 Yokohama Triennale.

Museum Haus Kasuya presented Matsuzawa’s “Quantum Art Manifesto” for its inaugural exhibition in April 1995 and “80 Years Problem, Declaration, Koan,” another solo exhibition of his works, in 2002. At a performance for the exhibition opening, Matsuzawa read the text from his works out loud directly to the audience. The museum has also featured his work in a group exhibition following his death. Its fourth show for this important artist focuses on “80 Years Problem,” a work from the latter part of Matsuzawa’s career belonging to its own collection. Documents and other materials related to Matsuzawa are also presented.
