Eiki Totori (1873–1943) was an artist born in Sakura, Chiba who studied Western-style painting under his cousin, Chu Asai. He contributed works to the Meiji Art Society and became a central figure in Kyoto’s Western-style art circles. He also studied in Europe. A landscape painter all his life, he was known for his light use of color while also following the trends of Fauvism, Cubism, and Impressionism. This exhibition features nine of Totori’s works from the museum collection as well as other examples of modern Western-style painting from artists with whom he associated.
