The exhibition is an installation featuring a bronze fire hydrant designed by Haroshi. Although aboveground pillar type fire hydrants have in recent years become an uncommon sight in Japan, they have long been recognized as a familiar and symbolic icon among skateboarders in the United States. It is considered a target among skateboarders to jump over a fire hydrant with a height of about 80 cm through performing a technique known as the “Ollie,” and countless videos of skateboarders attempting this challenge are posted on YouTube as well as various SNS platforms such as Instagram. Haroshi, who was also an avid skateboarder himself, recalls that when he first traveled to the United States about 20 years ago, he had been engrossed in jumping over fire hydrants. He remembers police officers cheering him on from their car, as they watched him perform his tricks. The bronze fire hydrant presented in the exhibition is a work that embody such memories, as well as the fondness and affection that Haroshi has for the everyday objects in his surroundings.
