Artists

Yoko Andrén, Yoko Irihi
At Awoba Soh, Yoko Andrén and Yoko Irihi present their works together for the first time in a duo exhibition. They met in 2014 as students at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and have kept an ongoing dialogue about their works online between Sweden and Japan since graduating. The gallery space becomes a meeting point for the two artists to connect their common artistic ideas IRL.
Yoko Andrén works mainly with found objects and snapshot imagery of surreal everyday life. Interested in visual language, she explores the concept of the image and plays with associations in a search for poetic translations as ideas become form. She displays digital prints of images captured through the mobile camera lens and transforms readymade materials in assemblages as joining entities into new constellations.
Yoko Irihi works with objects based on geometrical shapes, oil paintings which often depict dreamlike landscape scenery and still-life figures of mystery, and installations where she re-creates landscapes as objects are added to spaces. She deals with notions of the breaking down of boundaries in painting and expansion of the flat surfaces. Her work ranges from small intimate size to large scale outdoor installations.
The title of the exhibition “Resurfacing a Dreamscape” speaks of bringing a state of dreaming into the awake reality as if being in a daydream and revolves around the floating junction between psychological and physical phenomena. Living in the generation of information technology where social media and VR advances, the boundaries between inner and outer landscapes (real and virtual) become unclear.
