The Nihon Bijutsuin art association was founded in 1898 by Tenshin Okakura. It shut down temporarily but was revived in 1914 by Taikan Yokoyama. Ever since, it has maintained the traditions of Japanese art while laying the foundation for new art forms of the next generation. In 1945, the association started what was then called the Nihon Bijutsuin Small Works Exhibition and in 1970 was renamed the Spring Inten Exhibition. While the sizes of the pieces in this show are small, many are experimental works created with great attention to detail. This year’s Spring Inten Exhibition focuses on 192 pieces by artists who are from or who live in the Kanto area, including award-winning works as well as 35 pieces by members of the Nihon Bijutsuin. Enjoy the many creative efforts of artists ranging from masters to newcomers.
