*Kichijoji Art Museum will be open from June 1.

The black and white pencil drawings of Keisuke Tsuchida (b. 1974, Niigata) blend the mysterious, humorous, romantic, sensitive, and occasionally nostalgic. They have a magic in their varied expressions arising from their elaborate and dense use of shadow.

The soul is a consistent theme throughout Tsuchida’s work. “The workings of the soul cannot be seen,” he says, “but still I try to give form to this formless subject.” He digs deep within himself to find these forms, creating works that are neither entirely concrete or abstract, with iron hardness coexisting with a softness that combines the natural and mechanical to affirm a hidden vital power. Tsuchida’s first exhibition at a public museum features his early works through his new pieces.
