The center of Yokohama was originally a bay, but in the Edo period (1603-1868), the bay was reclaimed and transformed into land that is today’s Yokohama. At the end of the Edo period, the mountains and hills around the exhibition site were cut down and used as soil and sand for reclamation, and there are still several remains around the site that tell the history of that time. Surrounded by many cliffs and stairs, this exhibition site is also the place where the land of Yokohama was born. This exhibition, “Cliffs and Stairs,” focuses on the history of the birth of Yokohama as told by this exhibition venue. At the same time, it is intended to explore what life is and what it means to live by overlapping the geographical characteristics of this place, the cliffs and stairs, with the lives and lifestyles of artists and people.
This exhibition focuses on artists who have been continuously producing and exhibiting outstanding work of art both in Japan and abroad, and at the same time, continue to create work of rare and unique expression. The exhibition features sculptures made of acrylic laminates, colorful and exquisite paintings that look as if they were silk-screened, beautiful and weird installations, beautiful and poisonous ceramic works, two-dimensional work painted with cloth and thread, work created with hand-carved rubber seals, tranquil and intense photographic work, performances that probe the essence of society and humanity, and work that is both beautiful and mysterious.
