Tiger Tateishi
Koichi Tateishi, a.k.a. Tiger Tateishi (1941-98), developed an original world while traversing genres such as painting, ceramic sculpture, manga, picture books, and illustration.

Born in 1941 in the town of Ida in Chikuho, Kyushu (now Tagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture), Tateishi moved to Tokyo to go to university and made his debut at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition in 1963, and the following year formed the Kanko Geijutsu Kenkyujo with Hiroshi Nakamura (1932-). In 1965, he began to draw manga, and under the pen name “Tiger Tateishi,” he published a series of nonsense cartoons in magazines and newspapers.

In 1965, he began to draw manga as well, and under the pseudonym “Tiger Tateishi,” he published a series of nonsense manga in magazines and newspapers. While in Milan for a total of 13 years, he worked energetically on panel paintings inspired by cartoons and collaborated with designers and architects on numerous illustrations, designs, and advertisements.

After becoming busy as an illustrator, Tateishi returned to Japan in 1982, and since 1985 has been based in Ichihara, Chiba, where he has exhibited his paintings and ceramic sculptures under the name “Tateishi Taiga” and his manga and picture books under the name “Tiger Tateishi”.

Tateishi passed away in April 1998 at the age of 56, but his unique creations have never faded. This year marks the 80th anniversary of his birth, and we will be looking back on his diverse activities through more than 200 works and documents.
