Takamatsu Art Museum

In the spring of 2016, the Takamatsu Art Museum reopened after about a year of renovation work.
Conveniently located next to the central shopping street, the museum is an art spot with a contemporary style and relaxed atmosphere, as well as a "plaza" where citizens can come and go.

The museum has systematically collected over 1,700 works of art, focusing on "postwar Japanese contemporary art," "world art since the 20th century (prints)," and "Kagawa art (crafts)." The collection of contemporary art, which has become one of the best in Japan in terms of both quality and quantity, is a living art archive that we should be proud of, forming a cultural platform in the creative city of Takamatsu, where the Setouchi International Art Festival and other art festivals take place.

In addition to introducing a diverse array of art and new initiatives, the museum has a rich history. In 1949, soon after the end of World War II, the museum was the first public art museum in Japan to be established in the famous Ritsurin Park, and in 1988, when the Great Seto Bridge opened, it was relocated to its current location in the city center.

In 2016, the museum was reborn once again and will continue to grow with the times, together with the citizens of the city, while cherishing the passion of our predecessors for culture and art.
