The 73rd Annual Exhibition of Shōsō-in Treasures

Nara National Museum
Finished
The Shōsō-in was established as the repository of Tōdaiji Temple during the Nara period (710–794). At the heart of this collection of over 9,000 treasures preserved and passed down from ancient times to the present day are the most beloved possessions of Emperor Shōmu (701–756; r. 724–749).

This year marks the 73rd annual Shōsō-in Exhibition when around sixty of these treasures are selected and put on display. As ever, a wide variety of objects appears in the selection, including musical instruments, furnishings, textiles, Buddhist ritual implements, documents, and sutra scrolls. Among these, two of the most outstanding of all the treasures are the Genkan Lute of Shitan with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, which is exhibited in Nara for the first time in twenty-five years, and the Lacquered Pedestal for an Incense Burner with Gold Leaf and Painting, its vivid colors truly magnificent and arresting.

The many treasures in the repository associated with writing are another focus of this year’s show. There are brushes, ink sticks and an inkstone, and even paper. All of these objects have been the subject of important research in recent years, and they offer a perspective on the practices and material culture of Nara-period writing.
