Miquel Barceló is one of the leading artists of our time, creating original and dynamic work inspired by the great outdoors. Born in Majorca, Spain, he participated in the international art exhibition “Documenta 7” in Kassel, Germany in 1982, and has been active internationally ever since. In addition to painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking, Barceló’s work has included performances and large-scale projects such as the decoration of the chapel in the Cathedral of Palma in Mallorca and the ceiling of the United Nations Conference Center in Geneva, Switzerland.
Barceló’s work is not limited to Europe, sometimes traveling to the deserts of Africa or the highlands of the Himalayas. His interaction with nature has become an important source of inspiration for his artistic activities, and he has created work based on themes such as the earth and sea, flora and fauna, and bullfighting. His large paintings, in particular, have an overwhelming presence to the viewer, not only because of their scale but also because of the various materials used to paint them and the unevenness created by the wrinkles in the canvas. In addition to his paintings from his early years to the present, this exhibition features more than 90 works, including sculptures and ceramics, to introduce the full range of Barceló’s diverse artistic activities.
