2021 Bologna Illustrators Exhibition

Since 1964, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the world’s only international trade fair dedicated to children’s books, has been holding an annual competition for picture book illustrations, and many illustrators from all over the world submit their works. It is an open competition where anyone can submit a set of five illustrations to be judged fairly by a panel of judges who are experts in picture books.
Since 1978, the museum has held the “Bologna Illustrators Exhibition” as an annual exhibition to introduce the works selected for this competition. Last year, however, due to COVID-19, the exhibition was canceled. Although the situation is still not under control this year the Bologna Trade Fair Office decided to hold the competition online.
As a result, this year’s competition attracted more high-quality works than ever, and out of 3,235 entries from 68 countries, 76 artists from 23 countries, including 8 Japanese, were selected.
