Today, as the definition of authenticity is shaken by fake news and image editing, is it “fiction” or “truth” that design creates? Based on the theme of alternative realities created by designed images and objects, the Japanese version of the design project “Which Mirror Do You Want To Lick? (WMDYWTL?)”, which began with the 2016 Brno Biennale (Czech Republic) and has toured Europe and the United States, will finally be shown at Tokyo University of the Arts in the fall of 2021. As guest curators, we welcome graphic design collective Åbäke, Radim Pesko, Sofie Dederen, Kei Matsushita, Kiyonori Muroga, and Tezzo Suzuki.
The exhibition, which has adapted to the location and time it was previously held, this time challenged the context of “education” and “Japan”. Together with the curators, the students of Tokyo University of the Arts worked on the translation of the content of the European exhibition. Through research and dialogue based on the history of Olympic designs, unrealized design ideas, and the works of non-existent artists, students confronted the unanswered questions and became “translators” to give form to their understandings. It brings to the light the aspects of design as a way of giving meaning and asking questions, which are not always reflected in recent business and technology-oriented discussions.
