Taiga Ike
Ike Taiga (1723-1776) is one of the greatest masters of literati painting in early modern Japan. Ike was born in Kyoto in the middle of the Edo period when the Edo shogunate had been established for 100 years and society and economy were fully mature. Surrounded by the curious and learned inhabitants of this city, Ike, who showed talent in calligraphy and painting from his youth, developed a great interest in and admiration for Chinese literati culture, which was the latest mode of art of his time, and began his life as a calligrapher. He visited many countries to deepen his knowledge and experience, came into contact with ancient and modern Chinese poetry and learning, and expressed his longing for the continent he had not yet seen with his unique, free and generous brushwork. His works were unique and attracted a large number of supporters at a time when people were greedily seeking new culture.

On the other hand, Ike himself is said to have pursued elegance and integrity like an ancient sovereign or poet, without regard for worldly advantages. Ike established his own individuality as a literati painter and the people who gladly supported his way of life. Ike’s way of life and his works of art are truly a testament to the richness that 18th-century modern society produced.

This exhibition focuses on the outstanding calligraphy of Taiga Ike, which was donated by the Taiga Ike Museum and is now in the collection of the Kyoto Prefectural Government.
