Iwata Toshichi, Hisatoshi and Itoko: The Pioneers of Japanese Modern Glass Art from the Collection of Machida City Museum

Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex
Finished

Artists

Toshichi Iwata, Hisatoshi Iwata, Itoko Iwata
Toshichi Iwata (1893-1980) led the world of modern glass. Having free command of brightly colored glass, he pursued bold forms making use of shapes and patterns based on traditional Japanese aesthetics. In addition to works by Toshichi, presented here are those by his son Hisatoshi (1925-1994), who also became a glass artist, and Hisatoshi’s wife Itoko (1922-2008). There are altogether approximately sixty works from the collection of Machida City Museum. While looking back on the exchanges among Toshichi and artists in Kamakura through works in our collection, art dating from the period is introduced.
