Aino and Alvar Aalto: Shared Visions

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), a world-renowned modernist architect, had a wife, Aino Aalto (1894-1949), with whom he had an equal relationship as a design partner for 25 years. It is clear that Aino’s ideas and influences had a lot to do with many of the works that are now regarded as Alvar’s achievements. Based on the idea that “design is necessary for our daily lives,” the two left behind many masterpieces that are still loved today, such as architectural designs, furniture, and glassware, based on the characteristics of the Finnish environment and incorporating natural motifs. This exhibition introduces the achievements of Aalto and his wife, who influenced each other and complemented each other’s work, from their first encounter through the modernist trend to functionalism, and on to their success on the international stage.
