Toshiya Motai paints pieces on the correlation between format and spirit, and in 2020 has resumed his “Coupling of Odds” series, which consists of odd numbers of panels, and was completed once in 1998.
The work, titled “ta・KK・ei”, is based on the image of a crucifix painted for the chapel in a treatment facility for patients with the plague. Where it once looked at structural issues in 1998, it now focuses on the current pandemic. “ta・KK・ei”, has undergone a change in its interpretation of the meaning behind the crucifix and of the human form, and of the desire to paint and the purpose of the act.
