Kiyokata Kaburaki
Kiyokata Kaburaki is widely known as a painter of beautiful women, but Kaburaki himself said that it was not so much the beauty of women that moved him to paint, but rather the sense of the seasons and the charm of plants and trees, and he particularly enjoyed painting scenes from early to late summer. As particularly striking examples of his work, he cited yukata dyed in indigo on a white background, bamboo screens, wind chimes, lanterns, goldfish bowls, morning glories, Shibata Zeshin’s painted fans, and other summer items that were often seen in Meiji Tokyo, where the culture of the common people of Edo was still strong.

For Kaburaki, who loved the peaceful life of the Meiji era, the summer atmosphere made him nostalgic for the Meiji era. Tsukiji Akashi-machi, which has been described as a milestone in Kaburaki art, is another work that combines the late summer atmosphere with nostalgia for the Meiji era.

This exhibition introduces Kaburaki summer landscapes, including “Morning Cool” and “Tsukiji Akashi-machi” (preparatory sketches), “Evening Clouds” and “Teganuma,” as well as yukata’s designs for yukata.
