Back in the day, when the genre of “new music” was born, the U.S. hit charts were broadcasted on the radio, and recording on cassette tape was becoming popular. In 1981, in a time with no smartphones or CDs, “A Long Vacation” by Eiichi Ohtaki was released. This legendary album remains one of the greatest albums in the history of Japanese sound and continues to be listened to until this day.
It was not only the sound that was shocking but also the jacket illustration created by Hiroshi Nagai. The vivid and clear blue sky that resembles a resort area on the west coast of the U.S., the dazzling sunlight, the shimmering light reflected on the surface of the sea, and the good old American cars add impact to the screen. It is filled with the yearnings of the youth of the time, and the simple pop image, along with the clear voice of Eiichi Ohtaki, is deeply engraved in people’s memories.
Hiroshi Nagai has been active in a wide range of fields, including advertising and music, and is currently involved in music artwork, collaborations with numerous brands, television appearances, art fairs, and the publication of a new collection of his works. This exhibition will also display and sell Hiroshi Nagai’s valuable original artworks from recent years.
