Kasho Takabatake (1888–1996) was an illustrator acclaimed for his androgynous portraits of characters who were “girls within boys and boys within girls.” During the Taisho and early Showa periods, Takabatake was a unique presence in the publishing art world with a perspective that combined the masculine and feminine. Not concerned with public opinion, Takabatake believed in his own viewpoint and aesthetic sense, living “as he was.” His original illustrations are on display.
