All About Saicho and Tendai Buddhism

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
The year 2021 marks the 1,200th anniversary of the death of Saicho (767-822), a great teacher who brought a new style of Buddhism to the world at the beginning of the Heian period (794-1185). Saicho was fascinated by the Lotus Sutra, which teaches the idea of equality, that the path to enlightenment is open to all people, and he spread the Tendai sect of Buddhism in Japan based on this teaching. Enryakuji Temple, founded by Saicho on Mt. Hiei, overlooking Lake Biwa to the east and the capital of Kyoto to the west, has produced many high priests in Japanese history, and the various teachings they preached have had a great influence on Japanese culture.
