From the 1970s to the 1990s, landscape photographer Shinzo Maeda (1922-1998) captured the beauty of Japan’s natural landscape and made a name for himself both in Japan and abroad as one of the country’s leading landscape photographers.
Among his many works, one of his masterpieces is a photograph of Biei in Hokkaido and the surrounding hills.
In May 2021, Shinzo’s grandson, art director/photographer Kei Maeda, planned and designed the photo book “Hill to Hill” (published by BlueSheep), which sheds light on his grandfather’s photographs from a new perspective. Shinzo’s view of nature and the world of photography, with its timeless, universal beauty and quiet power, is needed once again in this day and age.
This exhibition consists of two parts: photographs of the hills of Biei, Hokkaido from the above-mentioned photo book “Hill to Hill”, and a selection of works from the 1977 photo book “The Moment of Encounter”.
At the venue, we will sell his new photo book “HILL TO HILL” and a set of 32 postcards re-edited from “POETRY OF NATURE”. Both of them will also be available at the online store.
