This talk event will be held in commemoration of the publication of “The Life of Charles Lang Freer, Adventurer in Japanese Art” (written by Akira Nakano), the first biography in Japanese of Charles Lang Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art.
The hosts are author Akira Nakano and art blogger Aoi Nikkicho. The two experts on the Freer Gallery of Art will talk about the process of acquiring the museum’s collection of ‘Matsushima Screens’ and the appeal of related works.
Charles Freer was a businessman who rose from humble beginnings to become a successful businessman during the railroad boom of his day. Although he had no art education, he had a unique perspective on beauty that was different from anyone else’s. He donated his collection to the U.S. government in the hope that art would serve as a bridge of understanding between the U.S. and Asia, and the Freer Gallery of Art was born. The book describes in detail his encounters with art, his interactions with leading cultural figures of the day such as Ernest Fenollosa, James Whistler, Takashi Masuda, and Tomitaro Hara, his bargaining with art dealers, and his thoughts on the opening of the museum.
