With his unique sense of depicting a frame in continuous movement, Takaaki Kato continues to work on the theme of time, projection, and memory.
One of the major characteristics of Kato’s recent works is that they are three-dimensional box-shaped paintings. This is what Kato himself calls “visual painting,” in which he adds thickness to the supporting canvas and depicts different moments on the top, bottom, left and right sides of the screen. This multifaceted development gives the work a sense of time and gives the viewer the feeling of moving back and forth in time.
One of the elements that bring rhythm to his boldly composed works is the “plate shift” that Kato consciously generates. By shaping the outline of the object with masking or other means and deliberately leaving a blank space between the object and the background, he adds a slight analog noise to the work. The abstract motifs, stripped of detail, have a wavering expression.
In this exhibition, titled “Bathroom Forest,” Kato tries to generate “time” by crossing spaces with different images- the bathroom, which blends in with our daily activities, and the forest, which gives a somewhat fanciful impression.
Kato has been active as an art director and graphic designer since 2012, joining the creative unit ‘Enlightenment’ and working for the design consulting company ‘Chikabi’.
