Katsumi Komagata “Pieces”

Gallery 5610
Finished

Artists

Katsumi Komagata
The exhibition will feature 30 original paintings, both large and small, created using oil pastels based on shapes created from pieces of paper, as well as the installation Pop Scope, a three-dimensional work created to accompany the new work, and tapestries. It has been six years since the “Issumi” exhibition, a series of innocent black and white prints created from beautiful hand-drawn lines, and this exhibition, which will decorate the exhibition space, will be a “new beginning for Katsumi Komagata.

The simple forms that emerge in various situations are an extension of his imagination in creating things, and the forms of “new beginnings” are an expression of the way he has always created his work.

Komagata, a designer and bookbinder, has published many picture books through his publishing company, One Stroke, and his “Small Design: Katsumi Komagata” exhibition (until the end of August), which started at the Itabashi Art Museum in Tokyo in 2019 and is currently traveling around Japan to the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum in Shizuoka Prefecture, is the culmination of his work. Since 2015, the gallery has been hosting a series of collaborative exhibitions and installations with artists from Japan and abroad under the art direction of Komagata and Ai Komagata. The gallery has also held workshops in conjunction with each exhibition, valuing the time spent sharing the joy of making and thinking. For this exhibition, “Pieces” and “One is Two” workshops will be held.

The Katsumi Komagata Method Workshop has been held in various countries by Komagata himself and has been highly acclaimed overseas. His experience as a graphic designer, his broad perspective on design as a book designer, and his open-hearted guidance to the feeling of making things make this a time when both adults and children can enjoy making things with an open mind. This has been passed on to his daughter, Ai, who has experienced it since she was a child.
