“In the five years between 1964 and 1968, I was one of those who took photographs of students who were called radicals, including the Zengakuren and the Zenkyoto.” -Kazuo Kitai
This exhibition by Yumiko Chiba Associates commemorates the reprint of Kazuo Kitai’s photo book, “The Age of Radicals,” published by Heibonsha last year and.
This book is the first to cover all of Kazuo Kitai’s photographs of social movements, which were the first series of his career as a photographer. The monumental photograph “Barricade” was taken by the artist while staying with students for four months in a barricaded campus after the Zengakuren went on strike in 1968 to demand democratization of the university.
In the 1960s, Kitai continued to take photographs of these movements from the inside. The photographs convey the sense of urgency of the students who gathered for the struggle and their earnestness in living through the turbulent times.
In this exhibition, 63 works from the series “Resistance,” “Radicals,” and “Barricades” will be exhibited.
