The exhibition will trace the history of Sanrio Co., Ltd. which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2020, and at the same time, it will provide an in-depth explanation of how the “kawaii” culture, which later became the focus of global attention, was born and developed, as well as the “thoughts of Sanrio” behind it, using valuable designs and products.
This exhibition will unravel the history of kawaii culture from before the founding of Sanrio, and delve into the origins and development of Japan’s kawaii culture from Sanrio’s unique perspective. Featured will be content that can only be seen in this exhibition, such as planning intentions and stories of hardships that can only be revealed by being on the inside. The exhibition will also feature business perspectives such as the strategies Sanrio used to build up its business as a company, the relationship between Sanrio and some of Japan’s leading artists such as Takashi Yanase, Ado Mizumori, and Renai Naito, and the re-creation of the Hello Kitty dress that attracted attention when it was worn by the world-famous artist Lady Gaga.
Of the more than 450 characters created by Sanrio to date, the exhibition will also focus on nostalgic characters such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, Patty & Jimmy, and over 800 products, the largest number in Sanrio’s history, as well as valuable original drawings and documents.
In addition, Sebastian Masuda, an artist and art director who is a leading figure in Japanese KAWAII culture, will be in charge of producing a space featuring the symbolic art “Unforgettable Tower” created for this exhibition, which will be dynamically combined with the unique scenery of Tokyo City View, as well as collaborative work with up-and-coming Japanese artists.
The Museum Cafe & Restaurant The Sun & The Moon, located on the same floor, will also feature a cute collaboration menu. The spectacular view from Tokyo City View, an observatory 250 meters above sea level, will be combined with contemporary artwork to bring visitors an even more dynamic Sanrio world.
