Settai Style - From Edo Chic to Modern Tokyo

Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Settai Komura, Harunobu Suzuki, Yasuyuki Namikawa et al.
From the Taisho era to the early Showa era, when popular culture was in full bloom, Settai Komura brought a new style to a wide range of genres.

This is the first exhibition in western Japan to present a comprehensive collection of Settai’s works, including bindings, illustrations, stage sets, and rare handwritten paintings and prints, which embody the elegance of Edo and the modernity of Tokyo. The exhibition also features ukiyo-e prints by Harunobu Suzuki, cloisonne enamelware by Yasuyuki Namikawa, and other Meiji artifacts that trace the lineage from “Edo chic” to “Tokyo modern”, as well as works by contemporary artists who have inherited these elements.
