Hideo Sawada
Born in Kawagoe, Saitama in 1955, Hideo Sawada is a graduate of the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1987, he went to Germany on a German government scholarship (Der Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst) to study under Professor Christian Höpfner at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg. In 1989, he became a Meisterschuller and returned to Japan.

Sawada’s work, which is palm-sized and simplified to the utmost limit, gives us a sense of random beauty, as if he has dug up the shape that the tree wants to be, rather than a shape that has been carved and formed by artifice. The work is created by gently leaning into nature and is completed when the viewer’s imagination is added.
