Koji Nishimi
In 1981, at the age of 24, Koji Nishimi moved to France, where he worked as an assistant to the postwar artist Kumi Sugai and developed his creative style. He has traveled throughout Europe, and in recent years has visited Norway, Finland, and Iceland, to cover the northern lights annually. Throughout his journeys, he was deeply inspired by the eternity of time engraved in history and the infinite expansion of the natural world.

Inspired by the Lascaux cave paintings and the rock carvings at Alta in Norway, he created a clay-like base with a rock-like texture, and then applied layers of colors and materials to create the constellations and aurora borealis, which radiate a light and create an overall unique expression. With an exceptional inquiring mind that captures the mystery of the infinite universe and the essence of ancient fundamental beauty, Nishimi’s works incorporate the phenomena of creation.

In this exhibition, his sixth solo showing at the Bunkamura Gallery and the 40th anniversary of his first journey to France, he will present a series of works that portray the ruins, constellations, and northern lights. We hope that you will enjoy experiencing extending beyond the frame universe, and the traces of eternity left to us by prehistoric humans.
