One of Japan's renowned crafts that is the ceramic art (togei) has seen changes in techniques and expressions throughout the periods of its remarkable evolution. Ceramic artists have been especially active in post-war period of Showa era, in which ambitious works were presented one after another. In 1950 Cultural Properties Protection Law was enforced in order to protect various craftsmanship, including ceramics, and five years later the revision of this law prompted the establishment of the Japan Kogei Association. The Japan Kogei Association is formed mainly by the Preservers of Important Intangible Cultural Properties (also known as Living National Treasures), as well as traditional craftspeople from various fields, who have been presenting their works mainly in the "Japan Traditional Art Crafts" exhibition. In 1973, artists from the Ceramic Art Division of the association held their first "New Ceramic Artworks" exhibition.

This exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Ceramic Art Division of the Japan Kogei Association and will exhibit masterpieces of its artists through which we will trace the history of the ssociation. Starting from artworks of successive Living National Treasures, as well as artists that inherit the traditions and use the materials distinctive to each centers of ceramic production, tea ceremony ceramics and other, the techniques and the beauty of this traditional craft will be presented. Furthermore, one of the highlights of the exhibition will also be the artworks of young artists. Our museum has held multiple "crafts and design" themed exhibitions until now. In this particular exhibition that puts the focus on the contemporary ceramic art, we plan to include 139 works of 137 artists mainly from the Ceramic Art Division of the association, as well as other artists.
