Chiharu Shiota "The Shape of Life"

Naha Cultural Arts Theater NAHArt
Finished

Artists

Chiharu Shiota
Featuring three installations by the contemporary artist Chiharu Shiota: "Inochi no Katachi" (The Shape of Life) made with damaged tiles from Shuri Castle, "Kibo no Dansu" (The Dance of Hope) created with Naha citizens on the theme of "people's wishes," and "Chisana Kioku wo Tsunagete" (Connecting Small Memories), which ties together participant's prized objects with thread. Shiota was stunned by images of damage to Shuri Castle when it burned on October 31, 2019, and she decided to "breathe new life" into its incinerated tiles. She created these works through exchanges with the people of Okinawa and research into the island's history.
