Held in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture at the base of Mt. Fuji, Fuji Textile Week is a hybrid event of art exhibitions and displays by local textile producers. Surrounded by nature, the city of Fujiyoshida boasts a tradition of textile-making that has continued for more than 1,000 years. While modernization has put pressure on Japan’s traditional textile businesses, many changes have been happening in Fujiyoshida over the past decade.
Interest in regional revitalization has grown, projects aimed at bringing back industries have been launched, and creative professionals with ideas going beyond tourism are coming to Fujiyoshida. The city is working with a diverse group of people to map out its future.
Focusing on textiles as a natural resource, Fuji Textile Week 2021 is building a network of creative exchange that will support the reinvigoration and sustainability of textile-making. Around ten groups of creators including installation artist Shinji Ohmaki, architect Yumi Koori, and clothing-art coordinator Yoshinari Nishio will hold exhibitions around Fujiyoshida’s city center in locations such as shops, warehouses, and a former bank building. There will also be displays by 12 local textile makers. A program of related events offers talks by artists and textile makers, live performances, and bus tours to sites of textile production. Discover the identity of Fujiyoshida and the fresh potential of textiles.
