Joan Miró
Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a great artist born in Barcelona, Spain. Although his name is widely known in Japan as one of the great masters of modern Spain along with Picasso, it is surprisingly little known that behind his creative activities was a deep knowledge of Japanese culture. In Japan, on the other hand, Miró's work has been introduced since the 1930s, and his monographs were published in 1940, ahead of the rest of the world, so Japan has been paying attention to his activities from early on. Even today, museums around Japan hold many of Miró's masterpieces in their collections, and his popularity continues to grow.

This exhibition explores the relationship between Miró and Japan through his early work, which symbolizes his youthful admiration for Japan, as well as his representative work, and the first exhibition of Miró's works in Japan. In addition, through Japanese folk artifacts from Miró's studio and a variety of materials showing Miró's interaction with critic Shuzo Takiguchi, this exhibition unravels the deep connection between Miró and Japan and introduces the well-known painter Miró from a new angle through approximately 130 pieces and materials.
