Keisuke Tsuchida (b. 1974) is a pencil artist who uses 10H to 10B pencils and draws countless vertical strokes to create a dense and overwhelming monochrome fantasy space.
The motif that Tsuchida continues to draw is the “heart." He says, "The movement of the mind can be expressed in words, but it cannot be expressed in form." As he says, "I want to see what happens when I give form to something that has no form, and make a work of art out of that." He quietly looks at the heart, and using only a pencil, he digs up what is inside of him and gives it form without making a loud statement. The most distinctive feature of Tsuchida's work is the vertical strokes that are meticulously drawn stroke by stroke. Unlike the realistic reality of pencil drawings, the "shimmering" created by the layering of vertical lines creates a unique rhythm and creates a fantastic world like a haze. This is a precise expression of Tsuchida's vision of the world, which is dedicated to giving form to the "formless.
In this exhibition, in addition to his representative works to date, Tsuchida introduces his new work, "Whereabouts," which depicts the theme of prayer with an overwhelming sense of scale and deep narrative. In the pitch-black darkness, a boat moves forward, carrying various thoughts and feelings, with a faint light shining on it. The inhabitants of the fantasy world on the boat seem to reflect the desires, anxieties, tensions, and hopes for the future of people living in today's turbulent society.
