Gallery Target is pleased to present a solo exhibition of embroidery artist Koichiro Takagi entitled "Is this my God?" The theme of this exhibition is "money". Takagi focuses on money, which can be both medicine and poison depending on how it is handled, and expresses the duality that lies behind “money” in his unique world of art.

Having lived in San Francisco, Takagi was influenced a lot by subcultures such as punk rock, underground comics, and skateboarding. Each of these cultures had its own original view of the world in designs, messages, and moods. At the same time, as a child growing up in a Catholic family, Takagi was influenced by the religious paintings at churches, priests' coats, and other ornaments that naturally came into view, as well as the religious world, depicted in the Bible, which naturally included glittering embroidery. Looking into the history of embroidery, which Takagi mainly uses as a medium of expression, European monasteries used embroidery as a solemn decoration to enhance people's religious beliefs and at the court, gorgeous embroidery was used as a symbol of power, and wealth.

Takagi's sensibility was nurtured between these subcultures that emphasize "anti-establishment" and "individuality" and the "faith" that worships the one and only God. On the surface of the works Takagi creates, there are strong messages and typographic designs that give a sense of subculture, and at the same time, there is a mixture of a mythical and allegorical world where animals speak with a sense of religion. You could say it's like Aesop's tales from the streets.

Takagi says that money is like a god or a devil, depending on the person - some worship it, some abhor it. To each of them, what is God, and what is value? In these confusing times when the value of everything and the position of religions are shaken, it is the most natural thing for an artist to question.

In addition to embroidery, Takagi's mixed-media works will also be presented in this exhibition, including silkscreens that he studied in San Francisco. The theme of "money," which is posed by animals with cute but eerie eyes and poses, will speak to both the divine and demonic aspects of things.
