National Treasure from the Tokugawa Art Museum - Hatsune Maki-e Lacquer Trousseau

Kyushu National Museum
Finished
The National Treasure "Hatsuon no Chou" in the collection of the Tokugawa Art Museum is a wedding set made for Princess Chiyo, the eldest daughter of the third Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu when she married the second Mitsuyu of the Owari Tokugawa family in 1639.

The name "Hatsuon" comes from the fact that the design used to decorate the furniture was based on the "Hatsuon" chapter of the Tale of Genji. The gorgeous furnishings, made with lavish use of gold and silver and advanced maki-e techniques, are renowned as the finest in the history of Japanese lacquer art.

This exhibition will display three of the National Treasures of Japan, including a sword rack, a leaning rack, and a hanging inkstone box depicting a scene from "Butterfly" in the Tale of Genji.
