Sesshu
In autumn, when Sesshu's masterpiece "Landscape Scrolls" is exhibited at the National Treasure Exhibition of the Mori Museum, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art has been exhibiting Sesshu's works from its collection every year. This year's exhibition is a little irregular due to the outbreak of coronavirus, but two exhibitions, "Sesshu's Buddhist Paintings" and "Sesshu's Landscape Paintings," will be held simultaneously from November 26 (Fri.) to December 19 (Sun.). In "Buddhist Paintings by Sesshu", we will exhibit Buddhist paintings by Sesshu that have been receiving renewed attention in recent years, such as the newly discovered "Kannon" by Den Sesshu, and in "Landscape Paintings by Sesshu", we will exhibit three important cultural properties by Sesshu in the museum collection, including "Landscape Scroll" and "Imitation of Li-Tang Maki-e".

Many of Sesshu's representative works are landscapes, and five out of the six national treasures were selected from landscapes. This is not a new phenomenon, and landscape painting was already listed as a genre to be evaluated in the art treatises of the Edo period. However, this was not necessarily the case during Sesshu's lifetime, and historical documents from the Muromachi period show that Sesshu was recognized as a painter who specialized in portraits and Buddhist paintings. This exhibition features Sesshu's Buddhist paintings, which have been attracting more and more attention in recent years. Among them, "33 Figures of Kannon (Avalokitesvara) on a Painted Scroll" is a recently discovered work that is being exhibited for the first time.
