Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Bruno Mathon
Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000) pioneered new copperplate printmaking techniques in France and became one of the leading copperplate artists of the latter half of the 20th century. His works are filled with soft space and seem to flow with eternal time. In addition to Hamaguchi's works, this exhibition introduces etchings by Bruno Mathon (1938-2020), a French painter who became familiar with Japanese art and culture.

After graduating from a film school in Paris, Mathon worked on short films, but decided to pursue expression more directly and studied etching. From the 1990s, he visited Japan frequently, and found in the Japanese craft, where "thought is in the hands," a potential not found in Western art. He saw the process of copperplate printing as an art in itself, and tried to express himself intellectually. For example, in the "Hidden Tuning Fork" series, the artist's questions and gaze are softly imprinted on the works. The artist's inner world of quietness, eloquence, delicacy, and humor also becomes an element, creating a dialogue between the etching and the viewer. For this exhibition, the museum asked poets Aki Oka and Shuntaro Tanikawa to write words that came to mind from the two artists’ works.

Copperplate engraving has a depth of expression that is different from oil paintings and ink paintings. Although the vectors of the two artists' works are different, they lead our inner senses far away like a quiet undertow, and illuminate the world beyond like the light of a star. The exhibition consists of about 20 works by Hamaguchi and about 50 works by Mathon.
