The Bologna Children's Book Fair, the world's only international trade fair dedicated to children's books, has held an annual picture book original illustration competition since 1964, and many illustrators from all over the world enter their work. The competition is open to anyone with a set of five illustrations, and all work, whether published or unpublished, is judged impartially by a panel of judges who are experts in the field of picture books.

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair Bologna Illustrators Exhibition has been held annually at the museum since 1978 to introduce the works selected in this competition.

The book fair had been held online since COVID-19, but this year, for the first time in three years, it was held locally in Bologna and was very well attended. The competition was again held online this year, and a record number of 3,873 entries from 92 countries were received. Of these, 78 artists from 29 countries, including four Japanese, were selected. This exhibition introduces all of the selected work.

In addition to the selected work, the exhibition will also feature work by SM Publishing Award winners Sarah Mazzetti (2019/10th) and Chuo Peixin (2021/11th) as a special exhibit.
