The Fukuda Art Museum will celebrate its third anniversary on October 1, 2022. To commemorate this occasion, this exhibition will introduce a number of masterpieces representing the museum and its treasured collection of modern paintings, many of which have never been shown to the public before.

In the past, the museum has held special exhibitions focusing on Kyoto painters such as Takeuchi Seiho and Shoen Uemura, and Tokyo painters such as Taikan Yokoyama and Shunso Hishida. This year's exhibition features works by artists such as Kagaku Murakami, Hako Irie, and Chikkyo Ono, who were not satisfied with existing Japanese-style paintings and established what is today “Kokukagai" in search of a new creative outlet.

Also on display for the first time are masterpieces by Matazo Kayama, Tatsuo Takayama, Yasushi Sugiyama, and Fuku Akino, who broke new ground in the genre of Japanese-style painting in the Showa period and later. Among them is Sugiyama's large-scale work "Mercy Light," which will be exhibited for the first time in 35 years.

In addition, 13 prints and 5 original drawings from the 18-piece "The Complete Works of Chikamatsu," a collection of works by Monzaemon Chikamatsu published in 1923, will also be on view.
