To attract the attention of the masses, many posters created for commercial and publicity purposes not only pursued attractive designs, but also vividly reflected the fashions and trends of their time. The Kyoto Institute of Technology has been collecting posters from around the world as part of its design research since the days of the Kyoto Higher School of Arts and Crafts, one of its predecessor schools. This exhibition features approximately 130 Japanese posters from its collection, including posters depicting beauties of the Meiji era to posters from the Taisho era, war years, and postwar economic growth period. The show provides an overview of the history of modern Japan and the changing face of the world through the posters that added color to each era. Artists such as Tsuguharu Foujita are represented.
