Artists

Seiho Takeuchi, Shoen Uemura, Shunkyo Yamamoto, Tessai Tomioka et al.
Seiho Takeuchi (1864-1942) was a painter who made significant contributions to the world of Japanese painting. Takeuchi studied the traditional styles of the Maruyama and Shijo Schools, and after studying many other schools, he went to Europe in 1900 and upon returning to Japan created a new style of painting that incorporated the realistic expression of Western painting into Japanese painting, thus opening up a new painting style. He was also awarded the first Order of Cultural Merit in 1937 and continued to be a representative of the Kyoto art world.

This exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of Seiho Takeuchi's death by introducing a wide variety of Takeuchi's work, as well as work by painters who were active in Kyoto at the same time, painters who studied at the Takezeki-kai painting school and Kyoto City College of Painting, and painters from the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai, of which Takeuchi was a member and advisor.
