Artists

Andy Warhol
As a standard-bearer of pop art, Andy Warhol depicted the light and dark of America's mass consumer society. This major retrospective exhibition will include his early work as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s, his iconic "Death and Tragedy" series depicting accidents and death in the 1960s, his underground films and television programs, his portraits of celebrities, and work from his later years that touch on his Catholic upbringing while remaining unwavering. This comprehensive exhibition will not tour but will be held exclusively in Kyoto.

Andy Warhol first visited Japan and Kyoto during his world tour in 1956. This exhibition will focus on the relationship between Kyoto and Warhol, displaying rare sketches and other items that demonstrate the connection between the city and Warhol and recalling the image of Kyoto that captured the young Andy Warhol's heart. Of the approximately 200 paintings, sculptures, and 15 films on display, more than 100 works, including the never-before-seen "Three Marilyns," will be exhibited for the first time in Japan.
