Animals in Ukiyo-e

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
A wide variety of animals appear in Ukiyo-e. Cats and dogs, beloved as pets, horses and cows that helped people in their daily lives, cranes and turtles for auspicious occasions, elephants and leopards imported from overseas, and even catfish that were believed to cause earthquakes are depicted in Ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e artists also used their imagination to vividly capture anthropomorphic animals, and even created rare beasts that did not exist in this world, such as the tiger cub stone. Ukiyo-e is indeed a treasure trove of animal representations.

This exhibition introduces approximately 160 works, offering visitors the opportunity to fully enjoy the rich variety of animal expressions.
